He is an influential preacher; generally genial and patient, and welcoming of all who would come to his settlement of New Canaan. (Usually played from a nebulous point in season two.) BASIC INFO WITH LIGHT SPOILERS: Throughout the course of Carnivàle, it becomes clear that all is not as it seems; Justin's great revelation in the first season is that he is, essentially, the Devil. Through season two, he works towards growing his power, gaining influence as a preacher and manipulating those around him. ON TRIGGER WARNINGS: Justin comes along with heavy trigger warnings, as the struggle between good and evil within him has not been an easy one, and fairly obviously slides to one side as the series progresses. Though he is initially shown as attempting to do good — he advocates for the migrants and for the poor, is genuinely devastated by the deaths of the orphans in his care, and begs to be killed when he first realizes what he is — he is revealed to have raped a woman in his youth, and commits several instances of sexual abuse through the second season. There is also a constant thread of sexual tension between him and his sister, though the nature of their relationship is never clarified. He also eventually makes advances upon his daughter (though he is unaware of his relation to her), and the showrunner has stated that in the planned third and fourth seasons, they would have been wed to each other. There is also some mild body horror involved in the overall Carnivàle mythos.
